Mostly built from wood, trees cut by axe, and shaped by hand, forged into buildings designed for shelter for people and animals, crops and hay. Old vehicles, once the pride and joy of someone... Long since gone into disuse and abandoned, these buildings, vehicles and the land they sit on are now slowly being reclaimed by Nature.

These are quite common water snakes to be found in south eastern Canada. Although it is not a deadly snake it can be quite vicious when cornered, able to leap out of the water up to 2 metres to strike at unwary birds or passing photographers. The snake in these pictures was about four feet long, a full grown adult!!

This goes to prove that not all good pictures (praising my work - but someone has to!) are of large animals and birds.

Possibly the mother was killed or may have abandoned the fawn being unable to nurse it. In cases like this it is best to leave the fawn alone as it's mother may come back. Sometimes the mother will leave her fawn for several hours while she goes off to feed. At this early age, the fawn has no sent to attract predators, I was hoping this was the case here. So I left the fawn where it was but not without taking the opportunity to take a few pictures first.

Very loyal and powerful dogs, they love any interaction with people but hate each other. An impossible task even for these powerful fish. After trying time and time again, they eventually become exhausted and float back down to a wide, shallow part of the river where they lay their eggs then die.
They are all raptors.
Typically, they are solitary, opportunistic feeders that hunt live prey (especially rodents). Using a pouncing technique practised from an early age, they are usually able to kill their prey quickly. Foxes also gather a wide variety of other foods ranging from grasshoppers to fruit and berries.
The Mule Deer prefers the forest environment. When it is threatened, it will bounce on all four legs over fallen trees and shrubs to help it escape from it's predators.

The White-tailed Deer is a lighter colour, smaller ears and prefers open fields and meadows. It's tail is the same colour as the rest of it's body but when threatened it will lift it's tail up and run away. The white tail wags as the deer runs and is a good signal for the small fawns to follow to safety.

Most people don't realize that the moose will loose his rack every Fall and grow it again in the Spring. My first photograph shows very clearly the white bone on his head where the rack has dropped off.

Moose like to spend the hot summer months up in the hills and mountains away from mosquitoes, in the Fall when the snow starts to get deep they move down into the valleys where the snow is not so deep.

The moose's main weapons are it's feet. One kick from a moose can smash a canoe in two. Up in the mountains when the snow is deep they are unable to kick their predators such as wolves and so are easy prey.

It is not unusual for a sow to have cubs of different colours. The main difference between the Black bear and the Grizzly Bear is the large hump between the shoulders of the grizzly. This hump is pure muscle which he uses to dig for marmots and ground squirrels.

Grizzly sows, being in open meadows will place her cubs behind her and then turn and face her advisory.

Bears do hibernate during the winter when there is no food available for them. Hibernation can last for up to five months during which time they do not eat, drink, pee or poop!
